“Faithful Witness Over Hood”

Eclipsed Sturgeon Moon rises over the summit of Mount Hood, Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge just after sunset on August 27, 2026. The eclipses warm glow is reflected in a long, shimmering path down the water of the Columbia River.
I’ve photographed many lunar eclipses over the years and every one is wildly different. All are beautiful in their own way but many are extremely difficult to successfully photograph. When I heard this one would already be partially eclipsed when it rises over the horizon, and then “peak” just an hour after sunset (instead of middle of the night) I knew I had to make a plan to capture it properly. I put over 300 miles on my motorcycle buzzing all around from East, West, North and South at sunset, nighttime, and early morning hours scouting locations and deciding where would be best to capture the glory. All the effort paid off when the moon perfectly aligned over Mount Hood in a mostly eclipsed “blood moon” state. This is a 2 image composite with a 200mm lens- the first frame is a longer exposure that captures the movement in the water and the second frame is a faster exposure to capture the moon without it being blurred.

The title “Faithful Witness Over Hood” is inspired by Psalm 89:37 in which God uses the fixed, predictable presence of the moon in the night sky as a symbol of His reliable word. “It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky”
