Hot August Nights

- The Hook, Hood River Oregon, Columbia River Gorge -

BOOM! Lightning bolts over the Columbia River Gorge photographed after sunset on First Friday August 4th 2023- an evening to remember!

First Friday event downtown Hood River was “Hot August Nights” car show and it was exactly that- hot and humid! Great turnout for the car show and everyone was having a wonderful time. The cloudy sky was a welcome change from the past weeks and months which had been sun, sun, and more sun. Towards the end of the event, sprinkles quickly turned into downpours, right around the same time I had decided to fly the magical camera for a few aerial photos, ha! I could tell the sky was getting more interesting so I regretted having to leave my family and the gallery and get into photography action mode but it was the right decision. Found myself at the Columbia Rivers edge for hours of photos well into the night! After the blazing sunset, lightning decided to show up for a bit, but not much of it! Maybe 5 or so bolts that I saw, and was able to capture the perfect lighting strike right over the Columbia Gorge, a dream come true!

For more of the story about how “Hot August Nights” was created, read on:
”The Hook” park is closed to vehicles at 9pm and they sweep everyone out to lock the gate promptly at 9pm. I wasn’t about to miss the shots, so I had the idea to leave my camera locked down on the tripod continuously shooting exposures while I re-parked, and then used my Onewheel to quickly get back to the scene. I was only gone 10 minutes, but would have completely missed the image if I didn’t think quick and do this. There were some other lightning strikes here and there but none anything like this one, especially lined up right over the Gorge. Success! Sky was still glowing after 9pm and it was pouring rain for the first time in months. Spectacular evening all around!
